The Drag and Drop Editor gives an intuitive way to create and edit your SkillTree compositions.
SkillTree composition, skilltree and skills
The SkillTree composition can contain multiple skilltrees. Each skilltree has a number of skills that are organized besides or below each other. The skills on the lower levels will remain locked until their parent skill has been completed. When you create a new SkillTree composition, you will be directed to the DnD Editor.
Dragging and dropping
Dragging and dropping can happen from the left menu to create new items, or on the canvas to rearrange skilltrees, or inside a skilltree to rearrange skills.
You can drop skilltrees on the canvas. It will indicate the drop zone in orange. You cannot drop a skilltree on another skilltree or on a skill. It would not make sense anyway. When dropping a new skilltree onto the canvas, it will always be placed at the end. So if you already have 3 skilltrees, your new skilltree will be ordered on fourth. You can reorder your skilltrees by dragging and dropping them on a different place.
Root skills do not require other skills to be completed first, as they are at the start of the skilltree. You can drop root skills on skilltrees, but not on other skills. The new root skill will be placed at the end of the root skills. You can reorder root skills by dragging and dropping them inside the skilltree. When you drag and drop a root skill, all of it’s children will follow to the new location.
Sibling skills can be dragged and dropped onto a skill to create. The new sibling will always be placed initially at the end of the list of siblings. So if you have already 3 sibling skills, the newly created will be fourth. You can rearrange siblings by dragging and dropping. If you drop a sibling skill on a root skill, it will (logically) also become a root skill.
Childs skills can also be dragged and dropped onto a skill to create. The new child skill will always be placed initially at the end of it’s (new) siblings. So you drop it onto the parent, and it will become a child of that parent, and in fact the last child of that parent. You can then rearrange the child skill if needed.
Master skills will always be placed into the skilltree as new root skills. This is a quick way to insert multiple skills all at once into your skilltree. After dragging and dropping the master skills item into a skilltree, you will be taken to the tables where you see all available skills. You can choose to select skills either from your Master skills list, from skills in existing Skilltree compositions, or (if available) skills from your hosted domain. After selecting the skills that you want to import, you will be taken back to the DnD Editor, where you can rearrange them as you see fit.
Changing the appearance or settings
There are ways to customize the appearance of your SkillTree composition. You can find a background editor. If you click on it, a list of available backgrounds appears. You can select a background to your liking, or you can upload your own image. Be aware that the image needs to be fairly large, as it will take up the whole screen. You can also customize the “theme” of the SkillTree. This means, setting a different font, or changing the sizes or colors of skill nodes. You can play around with custom theme settings as you see fit.
Top menu buttons “View”, “Monitor” and “Share”
In the top menu you will find the Eye icon that says “View”. If you click on it, you will see how the SkillTree composition will appear to users. You can click the Back button to edit the composition again.
There is also a button to Monitor Students. This will take you to a page where you can view the progress of people with whom you have shared the skilltree.
The last button is a Share button. This will open a side menu where you can find a link to view your SkillTree. You can distribute this link via MS Teams, Google Classroom, WhatsApp or email, whatever you like.
Last but not least, you can change some important settings. These settings will change the behavior of the skilltrees. If you want only logged in users to view your skilltree, and you want to be in control of setting skills to completed status (i.e. a school setting), you can manage that in the Share options panel.
